Our History
My Friends House, Inc. (MFH) was originally established in 1995 by the members of Ascension Lutheran Church as Neighborhood House which was envisioned as a community center to serve the Hyde Park/Crenshaw community of Los Angeles. In 2008, Neighborhood House sought incorporation as a 501(c)3 public benefit corporation and became My Friends House, Inc.

Under the leadership of program director Lorna Harrison and many dedicated volunteers, Neighborhood House sponsored several academic, health, recreational and training programs. These included elementary and secondary after school tutoring programs in collaboration with UCLA, the first computer lab in the neighborhood funded by The Ahmanson Foundation, and a summer academic and family recreation program offering a safe haven for community children, youth and their families known as Holy Ground. The organization’s first program was a weekly food and clothing distribution with monthly health screenings by a Parish Nurse.

Since becoming My Friends House, Inc. the organization has narrowed its mission to focus on hunger prevention and healthy living. MFH fulfills a critical need by providing a weekly food pantry, periodic clothing distribution, and health screenings to the most needy and vulnerable in our community.

In 2010 MFH formed its first Board of Directors and in 2012 installed its first Executive Director. Currently, MFH is an all volunteer organization with no paid staff.
